Nause Takes First-Round Lead In Walgreens Charity Championship

March 8, 2015

SUN CITY WEST, Ariz., March 7, 2015 – Wisconsin native Martha Nause, who moved to Arizona earlier this year, made herself right at home on top of the leaderboard in today’s opening round of the LPGA Legends Tour’s 4th annual Walgreens Charity Championship. Nause carded a 5-under-par score of 67 at Grandview Golf Course for a one-shot lead over Scottsdale resident and LPGA Hall of Famer Betsy King and Florida’s Laurie Rinker, both at 4-under 68.

"My driver was on and I only mishit one or two shots out there,” said Nause, whose one win on the Legends Tour came at the 2006 HyVee Classic. “I played very solidly and felt really good over the ball and, for the most part, selected the right club for my approaches into these very firm greens."

Nause has spent the winter months in Arizona playing matches with friends and working on her swing to prepare for this week’s season opener. She recorded bogeys on holes 3 and 11 in today’s first round, but countered with a tap-in birdie on No. 9, and a highlight of three consecutive birdies on holes 12, 13 and 14 on her back nine.

"I have been working on the mental side and keeping my head in the game,” added Nause, who won three times during her LPGA Tour career, including a victory at the 1994 du Maurier Classic -- then one of the LPGA’s major championships.

“Win or lose, I feel good about my effort and have stopped putting so much pressure on myself, which has really helped my confidence," Nause said.

LPGA Hall of Famer Juli Inkster, Rosie Jones, Barb Moxness and Sherri Steinhauer are tied for fourth at 3-under 69. Nine players are within three shots of the lead.

Sunday’s final round tee times start at 9 a.m., with the leaders starting at 1 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time).
