Pitch Shot
Alicia Dibos' pitch shot is perfect. She has more grass to get over, so her swing is bigger and the trajectory of the ball is higher and will fly farther than a chip and run shot.

The Difference Between
a Chip and a Pitch

by Cindy Miller

Chip & Run
When you are close to
the edge of the green and have more green to roll to get to the hole than
grass to get over.

Depending on how far you need to go, you may use a 7 iron, 8, 9, Pitching Wedge or Sand Wedge.

Hold the club lower on the grip, making the club shorter.

►  Play the ball back in your stance. (Toward your right foot for right handed players, left foot for lefties).

►  Make a small swing with your arms from approximately 8:00 to 4:00. The ball will land approximately 3-5 yards and roll the rest of the way to the hole.

The photo sequence of Debbie Massey shows you exactly how to hit a chip shot.

The Pitch
It is called a pitch shot when you have more grass or a bunker to get over and less green to roll to get to the pin.

You will always use your most lofted club. The preferred club is the sand wedge.

►  Grip down on the handle, making the club shorter.

►  Play the ball toward the front of your stance (toward your left foot for right-handed players, left foot for lefties).

►  The size of your swing will determine the length of the shot. If you swing from 8:00 to 4:00, it will go a certain distance. If you need to go farther, swing from 9:00 to 3:00.

►  Allow your wrists to hinge to help the ball go higher.

Chip & Run
Debbie Massey grips the club lower,
plays the ball back in her stance and
makes a short swing back to 8:00.
Debbie makes contact and will finish her swing at 4:00.
Notice that the ball is only going to fly
3 to 5 yards and will roll the remaining distance to the hole.
