LPGA Hall
of Famer Beth Daniel to Make BJ’s Charity Championship Debut
QUINCY, Mass.
(June 23, 2008)
– LPGA Tour Hall of Famer Beth Daniel will tee it up for the first
time in the BJ’s Charity Championship presented by OLAY, when the
fourth annual tournament is played Aug. 2-3 at Granite Links Golf
Club in Quincy, Mass.
Daniel, who will
team with Rosie Jones in the two-player team event, ranks 15th
all-time with 33 LPGA Tour victories, including the 1995 Welch’s
Ping at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, Mass. “I’m excited to play
in the BJ’s Charity Championship, as I’ve heard so many great things
about the tournament from other players,” Daniel said. “The team
format is so much fun for players, and the tournament does such
wonderful things supporting charitable organizations in the area and
throughout the East Coast.”
Other players who
have committed to play the BJ’s Charity Championship include
two-time defending champions Nancy Scranton and Christa Johnson,
2005 co-champions and New England natives Pat Bradley and Patty
Sheehan, and Hall of Famer Amy Alcott and Alicia Dibos.
Daniel, who has
played in one previous Legends Tour event (2007 Handa Cup), was one
of the LPGA Tour’s dominant players in the 1980s and early ‘90s. Her
1990 season ranks as one of the tour’s greats: Daniel won seven
tournaments, including the LPGA Championship; became the first
player to earn $700,000 then $800,000 in a single season; set a
record with nine consecutive rounds in the 60s, which wasn’t broken
until 2002 by Annika Sorenstam; and was named Associated Press
Female Athlete of the Year.
“Beth is one of
the greatest players in women’s golf history, so it will be a thrill
to watch her compete,’’ said Paul Bass, president of BJ’s Charitable
Foundation. “This will add to what we believe will be another
stellar field and an exciting draw for golf fans.”
