Coast Guard
applauds the "Godzilla Team"
Many volunteer groups have visited the Tohoku region since the
earthquake disaster. Among them, an organization named World
Mate immediately formed their "Godzilla Rescue Team," supplying
instant noodles, gasoline, and other items to people in the
disaster area.
Targeting
areas that received no governmental or private support, such as
Iwaki city, Fukushima and the northern parts of Ibaraki, they
visited isolated villages and areas with their convoy of 5
vehicles, including a micro-bus, van, and 4-ton truck. It is
worth noting the 28 Geiger counters they had especially imported
from England. The Godzilla Rescue Team used these counters to
secure their own safety while helping the people of Fukushima.
The
representative and chairperson of Kyowa Foundation, Mr. Haruhisa
Handa, says "The name for our Godzilla Team comes from Godzilla,
who converted the radiation and electricity he ate into power.
With the same unyielding spirit, I want to support my fellow
citizens in the areas that the government, SDF, and
municipalities are unable to cover, using the knowledge gained
from the Great Hanshin Earthquake. Currently, there are many
harmful rumors and false information about the radiation, but by
taking accurate measurements with our Geiger counters, we are
able to conduct our rescue activities very smoothly."
Of course,
all team members will have their radiation levels measured and
receive a medical checkup. Speaking of World Mate's activities,
an officer from the Japan Coast Guard admitted," the Godzilla
Team is above and beyond the SDF."
